How to determine proper lighting for my plant?

As a general rule, the more light a plant can get, the happier it will be. However, there are plenty of plants that do well in lower light spaces (snake plants are the all-stars here), but even those plants will thrive more and possibly flower in brighter light. South and west facing windows will provide the greatest amount of light.
A helpful guideline: if you can read a book around midday in the space without an additional light source, you have medium levels of light.
