Replica Plants Inspire at Gravity 2.0

A Massive, Multi-space Installation

Gravity 2.0, designed and built by Kaufman Development in Columbus, Ohio, is a large development project billed as “the world’s largest conscious community.” Spanning four multi-use buildings and courtyards and incorporating living, retail, office, and relaxation and entertainment spaces, the development and design team sought a low-maintenance solution to filling interior and exterior spaces with plants and greenery.  Over the course of five months, and as construction of this new development permitted, hundreds of faux plants and one moss wall were staged and installed over 17 floors in lobbies, on terraces, in community spaces, and offices throughout four different, multi-story buildings.

Defining and Designing Style

The mood sought by the client and design team was identified as inspired, textural, interactive, engaging, and natural.  The words they used to describe the look & feel of the fixtures, furniture, and equipment were eclectic, flexible, otherworldly, unique, and natural.  There are lots of curves and natural wood in the spaces throughout Gravity 2.0, and an emphasis on neutral, soft colors, and natural materials.

We started by sourcing an array of containers made of ceramic, terracotta, concrete, and metal, in assorted textures that looked “handmade” or rustic.  We selected containers in shades ranging from whites and creams, to peach, terracotta, and grey and black.  Some containers included wooden or metal stands or details to add an extra visual distinction.

Plants were staged in groupings in an assortment of containers, creating an organic and diverse look that reflects the importance placed by the client on art and design. Our production team even produced custom macrame hangers for a collection of hanging planters in one of the apartment lobbies.

The final result was a consistent, intentional design that pulled plants throughout all the major spaces in the buildings, one that connect and built on the design ethos of natural, authentic, and welcoming.  Gravity 2.0 is a place that encourages connection and community building, and these nature-filled spaces play a vital part in meeting those goals.
