Creating a Natural and Eclectic Environment for Gravity 2.0
Gravity 2.0 is a groundbreaking development project recognized as “the world’s largest conscious community.” The project spans four multi-use buildings and courtyards incorporating living, retail, office, and relaxation and entertainment spaces. The design and development teams faced a significant challenge: how to fill these extensive interior and exterior spaces with greenery in a low-maintenance yet impactful manner.
The Solution
Oakland Green Interiors to the Rescue
Oakland Green Interiors approached the challenge with a meticulous plan based on three core strategies: sourcing unique containers, customizing plant staging, and innovative solutions for unique challenges.

Sourcing Unique Containers
To create a natural yet eclectic environment, we sourced an array of containers made of ceramic, terracotta, concrete, and metal in assorted textures that appeared “handmade” or rustic. The containers varied in shades from whites and creams to peach, terracotta, and grey and black. Some included wooden or metal stands or details for added visual distinction. For interior spaces, we predominantly selected containers designed for single plants, while for exterior balconies, we opted for large, fiberglass rectangles in matte finishes to withstand high winds.

Customizing Plant Staging
Given the budget constraints and the need to manage future maintenance costs, the client preferred using non-UV-rated replica plants. For interior spaces, this wasn’t an issue, but for exterior areas, we educated the client on the risk of fading. Despite this, they chose to proceed.
- Interior Staging: We filled containers with sheet foam and glued the plants in place to ensure stability. The top dressing included a combination of Spanish moss, sheet moss, and faux black or white rocks.
- Exterior Staging: The process was more complex due to the need for drainage holes. We designed a system combining drainage gravel, landscape fabric, sheet foam, and pine bark nuggets to secure the plants. This custom approach ensured both stability and ease of transport.

Innovative Solutions for Unique Challenges
One unique challenge involved containers placed on a second-floor terrace that were prone to tipping over. To address this, we collaborated with a local 3D printing company to create container “sleeves” with wider bases. These sleeves provided the necessary stability at a fraction of the cost of new containers.
