Oakland Green Interiors successfully transformed Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s holiday decor, overcoming budget constraints and safety concerns with innovative solutions. By elevating and clustering trees, managing decor costs effectively, and ensuring stability, they created a festive atmosphere filled with holiday cheer. This case study exemplifies Oakland Green Interiors’ expertise and dedication to enhancing spaces with creative designs.
The Challenge
Nationwide Children’s Hospital sought to elevate their holiday decor to better reflect the vibrant, playful atmosphere created by their colorful interiors. However, the scale of the space posed a significant hurdle. Expansive areas required impactful decor, but the budget did not allow for the purchase of hundreds of large trees.
At the same time, safety was a critical concern. Any installation needed to be thoughtfully designed to prevent children from grabbing, pulling, or interacting with decor in ways that could pose a risk.

The Solution
Oakland Green Interiors developed a creative, safety-first approach that maximized impact while working within budget constraints.
Elevated Tree Displays:
To create the presence of larger trees without relying on excessive height, trees were staged in tall, silvery-grey containers that added verticality while keeping foliage out of reach. Each container was weighted with concrete bricks, and trees were secured with custom plywood bases to ensure stability and prevent tipping.
Layered Tree Groupings:
Rather than relying solely on large trees, we designed groupings that combined small (3–4’), medium (7.5’), and large (9’–12’) specimens. This layered approach efficiently filled expansive spaces while adding depth, scale, and visual interest throughout the installation.
Strategic, Cost-Conscious Decorating:
A tiered decorating strategy helped manage costs without sacrificing impact. Smaller trees were left minimally decorated, while medium and large trees featured ornaments either throughout or concentrated at the top. This intentional variation created a dynamic, visually engaging display while optimizing the overall budget.
The installation created a cohesive, large-scale holiday experience across the hospital’s public spaces. A total of 305 trees were strategically grouped throughout the first floor, cafeterias, and key areas, bringing a consistent sense of holiday cheer to over 1,600 feet of interior space. Additional decor, including tabletop arrangements and lobby garlands, enhanced the overall visual impact and created an immersive display.
Just as importantly, all elements were designed with safety in mind. Elevated, weighted containers and secure bases ensured the installation remained stable and out of reach, resulting in a festive environment that was both engaging and safe for patients, families, and staff.
