The Challenge

A Once Stunning Vision in Disarray in Columbus OH

In early spring of 2022, Oakland Green Interiors was brought in to rejuvenate the interior plant maintenance of the Huntington Center, managed by Hines. Among the tasks assigned was the monumental challenge of rehabilitating a 2400-square-foot living plant wall in the building’s main lobby. Installed in 2019, this wall, spanning two stories and flanking a trio of escalators, is the largest of its kind in North America. It features 8500 individual plants and operates with a 24-zone irrigation system.

The Solution

Methodical Rehabilitation and Strategic Management

01

Comprehensive Triage and Immediate Repairs

Upon taking over, Oakland Green Interiors initiated an in-depth assessment to understand the scope of the damage and develop a phased rehabilitation plan.

  • Triage of Worst Affected Areas: Immediate steps involved replacing dead or missing plants, treating infestations with systemic Merit, and identifying and addressing mechanical issues.
  • Visual Continuity: The replacement of grey-colored cartridges with black ones brought an instant and dramatic improvement, giving the wall a cohesive look.
  • Safe and Efficient Work Practices: Given the busy corporate office setting, all work had to be performed during late evenings or weekends. The team used ladders, lifts, and the wall’s internal steps and platforms to access all areas safely.

02

Systematic Irrigation System Overhaul

The irrigation system was vital for the health of the living plant wall. Oakland Green Interiors collaborated with irrigation specialists to ensure it functioned optimally.

  • Cleaning and Unclogging: Over several sessions, the team removed every panel to clean out water troughs, eliminate excess roots, and unclog drainage pipes.
  • Mechanical Repairs: Damaged valves, piping, and wires were replaced to restore the system’s efficiency.
  • Preventative Measures: To prevent future breakdowns, the team implemented processes to reset the irrigation timer after power failures and is exploring remote monitoring and probe-based moisture systems.

03

Redesign and Continuous Improvement

With the wall’s health restored, Oakland Green Interiors focused on redesigning and maintaining the living plant wall to revive its original splendor.

  • Intentional Planting Design: The team crafted a planting design reflective of the original plan, reducing the prevalence of mealybug-friendly plants and incorporating a streamlined palette.
  • Nutrient Management: Alternating Merit treatments with liquid soil amendments and fertilizers boosted the plants’ health.
  • Proactive Maintenance: Continuous monitoring and systemic treatments helped prevent future issues, ensuring the wall remained a vibrant centerpiece.

The Outcome

A Resplendent Revival and Industry Recognition

The transformation over the last 16 months has been nothing short of remarkable. The living plant wall at the Huntington Center is now a lush, thriving biophilic display that receives regular compliments from clients, tenants, and visitors. The visually striking installation has regained its status as a showpiece, aligning with the property manager’s original vision.
