As a general rule, the more light a plant can get, the happier it will be. However, there are plenty of plants that do well in lower light spaces (snake plants are the all-stars here), but even those plants will thrive more and possibly flower in brighter light. South and west facing windows will provide the greatest amount of light.
A helpful guideline: Wherever you’re considering placing your plant, at the brightest time of the day (usually around noon) hold your hand up and look at the shadow.
High light: Well-defined shadows, with contrast.
Low light: Faint shadows, with no real outline.
If you’re looking for a more precise measurement for a specific plant, there are plenty of options for tools to utilize: phone apps that measure foot-candles, or a physical light meter that can easily be purchased on Amazon.
